On December
15, 1972 the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)designated June 5th as World
Environmental Day (WED) to stimulate and enhance public awareness towards the
environment; and to catch political attention and action. The date was selected
because it was opening day of the UN Conference on Human Environment that led
to the establishment of United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) since
then each year 5th June is celebrated WED in different locations of
the globe with a specific theme. This year’s theme for World Environment Day 2022 theme,
‘Only One Earth’, focuses on living sustainably in harmony with nature. The
Government of Sweden will host Stockholm+50 , an international meeting to
commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1972 Stockholm
Conference and to accelerate implementation to deliver on the 2030 Agenda and achieve sustainable recovery from
COVID-19.
Stockholm+50 will provide an
opportunity for the international community to strengthen cooperation and show
leadership in the transformation towards a more sustainable society, in line
with the declaration that was recently adopted in conjunction with the marking
of the 75th anniversary of the UN.
The 1972 Stockholm
Conference resulted in the Stockholm Declaration including several guiding
principles on global environmental governance. Another result of the meeting
was the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and
World Environment Day.

Zero-tolerance for the illegal
trade in wildlife both in words and action should be enforced from this day.
Use natural
resources wisely so that there is less environmental pollution and Less threat
to wildlife and mankind on earth. WED needs not to be seen just a day set aside
in a year to discuss, undertake and solve environmental issues as they affect
the world but the day must continue every day. It should not be just one day in
a week, month, year or a decade but every day of our lives. We should celebrate
with zeal and zest our accomplishments of WED and do so with the renewed sense
of energy. The challenge is how can we discuss, experiment
and improve the environment through a single day set aside in a year. To most
of us, if the day is over and environmental issues suspended till the next WED
we need to change such a callous attitude towards our environment rather we
need to examine critically the state of our environment and to consider
carefully the actions which each of us must take, and then address ourselves,
to our common task of preserving life on Only One
Earth. let's Go For safety of Life!
